1991: Elementals Sex Special

Elementals Sex Special (1991) #1-4 by Bill Willingham and many others

I wasn’t quite sure how to do all these porny Elementals books — there’s quite a lot of them, and I was tempted to just do an omnibus post of this and Elementas: Lingerie, Elementals Swimsuit Spectacular, Elementals Sex Special v2, and of course, Elementals Sexy Lingerie Special. (I’m assuming the other lingerie special wasn’t very sexy.)

I mean, just out of sheer embarrassment.

But… let’s just do them separately?

So — the first one is written by Bill Willingham, and was originally intended to be a normal issue of Elementals before Comico went bankrupt. After Andrew Rev bought Comico, he decided to make a special out of it… but didn’t quite settle on a title. Is it “Elementals’ Sex Special” or “Elementals Sizzling Sex Special” or “Elementals Sex Special”?

Willingham tries hard to extricate himself from any association with the Rev Comico:

RevCo(mico) put Willingham’s name on a lot of stuff where Willingham wasn’t really involved, but apparently he did actually write the first issue of this series. But not as a special.

How classy!

Anyway, this issue is about Fathom talking to her shrink, and also having sex with her were-dolphin boyfriend. (He’s a dolphin that can change to human form.) It’s fun.

The other story is written and pencilled by Willingham, and is about this gummint agent seducing Tommy/Monolith. If I remember correctly, he was twelve when he died and became an Elemental? So it’s like… eh…

Like… ehh…

But he’s fifteen now, even if his body hasn’t aged, so it’s totally OK! It’s not skeezy at all!

These are totally real letters, I’m sure.

The first issue was such a success that RevCo scrambled and got people in to do more stories.

Eric Dinehart/Tony Akins bring some energy to their bit, which… er… features Merlin, who has spent a thousand years in the body of a ten-year-old, having sex with that magical creature.

Say, what kind of show are we running here!?

They bring some energy to the proceedings.

“Secret of the Dwarfs”? I guess this is what was published as Kingdom of the Dwarfs instead. (It’s a reprint of a third of the book from 1980 by the same name.)

Comico say they’re making a t-shirt from that Fathom/Dolphin sex cover, which I’m sure millions of people are clamouring to wear. And also a sex survey.

Apparently the second issue was also a success, because now they’re talking about a ten part “War Interlude” series running in this series.

The connection to the main storyline in the Elementals series gets a bit tenuous at point, but some of these stories are pretty entertaining.

Like this fight scene.

Huh, that’s an interesting art style from Tom Nemoda…

The results from the survey is in! Fathom won! But Monolith is also on the list, and amusingly enough they point out “mind you, not Tommy” (he’s the kid from the second story). So perhaps they were feeling the general skeezyness of the first issue…

In the final issue, they’re announcing all the exciting things that are going to happen in subsequent issues, but I think Comico went bankrupt again or something?

The colouring by Marcus David on this is interestingly weird.

Avalon? Another series that didn’t happen.

As sex comics go, this isn’t a very explicit book (this is as explicit as it gets), but it’s a deeply weird series. But I guess you can say that’s been in its DNA since the very first issue — people were writing in from the start complaining about how inappropriate “certain things” were. So I guess RevCo is just taking things to their natural conclusions…

Heh heh. That’s a good ad.

Anyway. Was this a good series? No. But was it worth reading? Also no. But… it’s really not as bad as I thought it would be. There’s some good jokes, there’s some interestingly wonky artwork, and it just seems so… odd… that it’s hard to be mad at it.

I’m unable to find any contemporary reviews of the book, and I’m not surprised. But I wonder whether it got to be “collectable”, and:

No, not really. (This is from 2010.)

There aren’t many reviews on the intertubes, either:

The cover is provacative but really the sex aspect of this book is not that interesting. It just feels like a gimmick. But, the plot elements I feel are more interesting in how they tie into the main Elementals books. The art is average but not particularly engaging. I know this a comic but I feel like the dirty scenes could have been drawn to create more excitement in the reader. These scenes are quite boring. But hey, look a nipple. Meh.

Apt criticism:

This may be a weird thing to say, but I feel like if you’re going to sell something called a “Sex Special” you’ve gotta at least show me a shaft, man.

Heh heh:

They wanted you to send them a written essay describing your “most erotic fantasy” involving an Elemental. They were gonna print it. You had to request your name and address not be included! By God! Who came up with this?!

I had the same thought.
